Paver Calculator for Patios and Walkways
Estimate how many rectangular pavers to buy for a patio or walkway from its size, your paver dimensions, joint spacing, and a cut allowance.
Enter Your Project
Measure the full rectangular area to be paved. For an L-shaped project, calculate each rectangle separately and add the order quantities.
Example: 12 ft.
Example: 10 ft.
Measure the actual face, not a nominal label.
For one rectangular paver size.
Use the product’s specified gap. Enter 0 for a no-gap comparison if you are unsure, then check the package coverage before ordering.
10% is an editable example, not a universal requirement.

How to Use This Paver Calculator
Enter the patio or walkway length and width in feet. Enter one paver’s actual length and width in inches, then the planned joint gap and your cut or spare allowance. If the pavers are sold only by the box, enter the number of pavers in a box to see how many full boxes you would need.
This estimates a field of one rectangular paver size. It does not lay out rows or count individual edge cuts. Check the manufacturer’s published square-foot coverage per box before ordering, especially for mixed-size packs, shaped or permeable pavers, or a pattern with dedicated border pieces.
Formula and Worked Example
Project area = area length × area width, in square feet
Approximate coverage per paver = (paver length + joint gap) × (paver width + joint gap) ÷ 144, in square feet
Pieces to plan for = round up [project area ÷ coverage per paver × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)]
Full boxes = round up [pieces to plan for ÷ pavers per box]
For a 12 ft × 10 ft patio, the area is 120 sq ft. An 8 in × 4 in paver with a ⅛ in gap has approximate coverage of 8.125 × 4.125 ÷ 144, or about 0.23275 sq ft per paver. The unrounded estimate is about 515.58 pieces; with 10% added, plan for 568 pavers. If there are 48 in a box, that means 12 full boxes (576 pieces). Verify the coverage printed on the actual product, because its spacer lugs and stated dimensions can change the count.
Before You Order
- Break L-shaped or irregular areas into measured sections. Subtract large openings; allow for extra cuts around small ones.
- Use a joint gap allowed by the specific paver and installation system. Wider gaps reduce the approximate piece count, but can have other installation consequences.
- Increase the allowance when the pattern, borders, curves, or cuts create more offcuts. Save usable cut pieces where practical.
- Use the product’s packaging coverage and bundle rules as the final ordering check. This calculator does not estimate edge restraint, bedding material, joint sand, excavation, or base depth.
Plan the Base and the Rest of the Project
Once you know the footprint, use the gravel calculator for a separate base-volume estimate, with a depth suited to your site and project. Write the pavers, base, bedding, restraints, and delivery assumptions into the material takeoff checklist. Check drainage, utilities, site conditions, and access with the outdoor project site checklist. Browse more tools in the DIY calculators directory.
Estimate Limits and Sources
This is a quantity planning estimate, not an installation design or a guarantee of coverage. For installation details and manufacturer dimensions, follow the product instructions and local requirements. Unilock’s paver planning guide notes that actual product and base needs depend on the project; its patio installation guide discusses layout and reusing cut pieces. Belgard’s installation guide shows that joint width and base details depend on the product and installation.
