Mulch Calculator

Estimate how much mulch you need in cubic yards, cubic feet, and bags based on the project area, mulch depth, bag size, and waste buffer.

Enter Your Project Size

Most landscape beds use a thinner layer for refreshing and a deeper layer for new areas.

Choose the shape that best matches the area you measured.

Depth has a major effect on the total amount of mulch.

Measure the full length of the bed or project area.

Measure the full width of the bed or project area.

Most bagged mulch is sold by cubic feet.

Adds extra for uneven beds, settling, and spreading loss.

Optional. Used for bagged mulch cost.

Optional. Used for bulk mulch cost comparison.

Optional delivery, rental, or minimum-order fee.

Enter values and calculate.

Cubic feet

Adjusted for buffer.

Bags needed

Rounded up to whole bags.

Cost estimate

Uses your price inputs.

This calculator gives a planning estimate only. Real mulch needs can vary because of uneven beds, settling, old mulch depth, bed shape, and spreading loss.

How to Use This Mulch Calculator

Enter the size of the area, the mulch depth, the bag size, and a waste or settling buffer. The calculator estimates cubic yards, cubic feet, bag count, and optional cost.

For small landscape beds, bagged mulch may be easier. For larger areas, bulk mulch is often more practical, but delivery fees and minimum orders can change the total cost.

Formula Used

Area = length × width
Depth in feet = depth in inches ÷ 12
Cubic feet = area × depth
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Adjusted amount = amount × (1 + buffer %)
Bags needed = adjusted cubic feet ÷ bag size

Example Calculation

A 10 ft × 8 ft bed at 2 inches deep has:

10 × 8 = 80 square feet
2 inches ÷ 12 = 0.167 feet deep
80 × 0.167 = 13.33 cubic feet
13.33 ÷ 27 = 0.49 cubic yards

With a 10% buffer, that becomes about 14.67 cubic feet, or about 8 bags if each bag contains 2 cubic feet.

Common Mulch Estimating Mistakes

  • Ordering by square feet without accounting for mulch depth.
  • Forgetting that bagged mulch is usually sold by cubic feet, not square feet.
  • Using too much mulch around tree trunks or plant stems.
  • Ignoring old mulch already in the bed.
  • Ordering the exact calculated amount with no buffer for settling or uneven spots.
  • Comparing bagged mulch and bulk mulch without including delivery fees.

Important Planning Note

Use this calculator as a planning tool only. Mulch depth depends on the bed, plants, drainage, old mulch, weed pressure, and local conditions.

Avoid piling mulch directly against tree trunks, siding, posts, or plant stems. Too much mulch in the wrong place can trap moisture and create problems.
